JB Architecture, now JBA Architects, was founded in May 2004 by Jeanette Bertsch. Jeanette Bertsch moved from Muenster, Germany to Cape Town, South Africa in 2000. Working in joint-ventures with Werner Randelhoff as well as Cocoon Architects gave her the technical knowledge to create her own style which integrates European Architecture in its South African environment. JB Architecture is specialized in Residential Buildings with high emphasis on interior details.

LOBSTER HOUSE
Creating homes around the world was the initial idea of the Guest house in Camps Bay, the so-called lobster-house. Jeanette Bertsch presenting JB Architecture today was then part of the planning team from Cocoon Architects, which designed this extraordinary building. It was completed in 2003. The concept is easy and clearly shown by the architecture: 6 appartments, called cocoons, each providing bedroom, bathroom and a working station are attached to the centrebuilding. This building, also being the structural centre of the building, consists of 2 kitchens and 2 lounges, dining areas, with pool and Jacuzzi outside. Sea or mountain view can be enjoyed from wherever you are in the perfectly sloped situated site of the lobster house.Even so from the glazed shower boxes which can be slided away. The centrebuilding is attached to the rocks in the slope in order to carry and support the loads of the canterlieving light structured cocoons.
THE COLONY
Having been a guest-home for a couple of years this colonial house was converted into a high-class guesthouse where new finishes emphasize to a harmenous marriage of old and new. Whilst doors and windows have been kept and treated with a rich stain, the victorian look on the fassade has been completed by timbershutter and by rebuilding the original fassade through exposure of columns and openings - Werner and Randelhoff Architecture designed the overall look of the home and completed the building by the end of 2003. Jeanette Bertsch was responsible for interior details and layouts. The bathrooms have become main features in the house and guests can enjoy a hot bath in the open space of the room by sliding the big glass panels away. Being limited space wise, garden, entrance situation and pool are brought into one functional concept with water features giving you a peaceful feel in the middle of the city of Cape Town.
HOUSE SPIEKER
Not much is left of the Omi-house - as the owner likes to call it. A very simple, one storey victorian building. The idea of the house, completed in 2004 by Werner & Randelhoff was to create a villa like one can find in bigger European cities. Getting the brief, Jeanette Bertsch and Werner & Randelhoff created a simple two storey building. Using aluminum french doors combined with purpose made designed burglar- / sun-shutters, the fassade is kept clean and repetitive. The floating roof takes the heaviness off the square building and leaves you with views onto Table Mountain from all parts of the top floor. The interior of the building is kept completely in white and grey, big open plan rooms, screed floor, sandblasted galls liqueur finishes of kitchen and built-in cupboards changing the Oma-house into a modern contemporary building giving it a homely touch through limewashed timber doors, ceiling and staircase. The axis starting from the front door and ending in the back garden leads you through a double volume passage over a steel staircase onto a landing and from there over a bringe to the braai area and the small, glass tiled pool.
BIG BAY
Bauphase designed this big family home on a plot in Blouberg, Cape Town.
This plot with good sea- and mountain views can still be purchased together with the thoughtfully designed building plans. Jeanette Bertsch was responsible for the technical support and parts of the detail planning of the home. The interior was ment to be kept in natural materials and creates a feel of open space and generosity.
Being very restricted in design features, this house is a good example of creating rooms with an extraordinary feel.
